TC Prohunter Encore bullet choice???
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:42:31 AM »
I picked up a TC Encore Prohunter and three barrels for it. I'm wanting to get over the counter ammo what would you recommend?

28" fluted stainless .223
28" fluted stainless 25/06
24" stainless .243

Looking for proven accurate rounds out of these barrels. I'd prefer heavier in the .223 but I read a couple places it performs poorly with over 50gr bullets? No clue what to shoot/use the 25/06 barrel for it fell into my lap couldn't say no. And the .243 I was thinking 100gr boattails?

Thanks

If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

A hammer exteneder is a nice ad on and some trigger work would really tighten up those encore groups

If you buy a hammer extension, buy the one from Bellm TC's, and you will also have to buy the heavier hammer spring. Is the frame a Pro hunter frame or an Encore frame?  If it's a Pro hunter, you won't need the hammer extender or the spring because it will have the swing hammer.  Bellm also sells a trigger job kit you can DIY. I've got all that stuff on my Encore but I don't have any of those caliber barrels.
The .223 is a 1:12 twist, the .25-06 is a 10 twist and the .243 is also a 10 twist. I don't honestly have the slightest idea how to relate barrel twist to a good bullet choice but I'm sure someone can expand on that info.

Enjoy it, they are a ton of fun.

I don't think you're gonna like any of that stuff. :bdid: Might as well just sell it all to me!! :chuckle: :chuckle: I've been thinkin about getting either the 223 or 25-06 bbl for mine but can't really justify it cuz I never get out to do any dog (prairie or yote) huntin. Sure would like to though. Have fun with the new toy.

I'll get to pick them up this week. I traded a few tanned furs for them. I got 3 barrels with scope rings and mounts the Pro Hunter, 4-12x40 Pentax scope and a few other things for a tanned wolverine, lynx, marten, mink, fox, and beaver. All nice furs and someone has a very nice AK collection now. If I would have sold them I'd have gotten around 1,400 for them all. I sell to the taxi market. I'd rather have guns than cash, cash disappears to quick :)

It has the muzzle loader forend as well. What do I need to use the 12 gauge rifled barrel on it. Can't imagine a 28" rifled slug barrel.

You have to remember those rifles don't have an action or anything, it's all part of the barrel. A 28" barrel is not as big as you'd think. I think when I put the .280 standard rifle contour barrel on mine and stand it on end next to my Ruger 10/22, it's only barely longer and thats a 26" barrel.  With the brake on my 300win mag barrel it's right about 28" and I still think it's a nice and compact rifle. Not light, but compact. I wouldn't worry too much about a 28" barrel. It'll be more compact than you think. The only thing you'll need is the right fore end for the shotgun barrel. I would highly recommend the Bellm TC's oversized hinge pin. Look at their website. I bought the 3 pack to make sure I got the right size but it seems that the #1 size will fit most of them. That is a must-do for good groups.
Check out www.encoreclassifieds.com for a lot of TC stuff. You'll find the fore end you'll need there for sure. Usually cheap too.

So it's a pro-hunter frame?

Pro Hunter frame. Hoping the recoil system helps my daughter with the .243.

the recoil in 243 wont be bad at all . the larger calipers like 7mm and .300 are a different story . In those calibers a break would be very nice.

Talk about compact, I've got the 24" stainless 280 bbl and it really looks short but the bbl is the same length as my Remington Model 700 280. I've also got the 26" SS fluted barrel in 7mm Mag and no brake. I could shoot that thing all day. I don't think it kicks bad at all and I'm not a big guy, 5' 8", 175. Natchez Shooters Supply has a good selection on a ton of barrels and calibers and good prices too. I'm not sure about the length of the shotgun barrels. Have fun with those!!
